SCENE7: Conduction is heat tranfer through solids like metal. SCENE16: I hope you like it here! Home made 6x7 tilt shift camera, tominon 127mm f4.7,red filter, Ilford PanF 50, Ilfosol3. Students know heat flows in solids by conduction (which involves no flow of matter) and in fluids by convection (which involves flow of matter). In solids, this transfer is called conduction. More energetic molecules in a hot substance collide with less energetic molecules in a colder substance, transferring energy and therefore heat. When the heat transfer involves solids then we call it conduction. For conduction to work there needs to be physical contact between the two systems in question. Heat can be transferred from one place to another by three different methods, namely Conduction, Convection and radiation. This process of heat flow is called conduction and happens in solids such as metals. This is because the particles or atoms are close together. Conduction is heat transfer from warm to cooler areas within a material, or between two materials touching each other. In the event that heat transfer occurs through several solids, the above equation can be adapted by supplementing the solid's thickness (L) divided by its thermal conductivity (λ). Gases, such as air, do not conduct heat very well. SCENE8: The heat is tranferred from the hot coffee to the metal spoon. SCENE15: Carol, thanks for inviting me to your house!! To slow down the transfer of heat by conduction from one solid to another, materials that are poor conductors are placed in between the solids.
